Calcium

Calcium is an essential mineral for human nutrition. It is required for strong bones and powerful teeth. An adequate calcium intake provides them with stability and solidity. It is essential that a lifelong supply of sufficient calcium is provided via nutrition. The mineral provides vital protection against osteoporosis in old age. As well as having an important function in building up bones, calcium also plays an important role in many metabolic processes.
Milk and milk products are the most important sources of calcium. Cheese has the highest calcium content of all milk products and it also provides vitamin D which is essential for strong bones. Young people and adults should consume 1,000 to 1,200mg of calcium every day. It is particularly important that children and young people have a sufficient calcium intake as they are still growing and building up bone mass. A daily calcium intake of 1,200mg is recommended for them. It should not be difficult for cheese lovers to follow these recommendations. By consuming 100g of Edelpilz for example, an adult has already attained around two thirds of the daily necessary calcium intake.
