Cholesterol is a fat-like substance which is only found in foods of animal origin like meat, sausage, eggs, milk or cheese. It performs many important functions in the human body. It is used for building up cell walls or the body's own hormone production for example. The majority of cholesterol is produced by the body itself; only around ten per cent is retrieved from food. This means that the cholesterol content is not a problem for people in good health. Anyone with a high cholesterol level must lose weight and exercise regularly if overweight in addition to taking the necessary medication. The intake of food with a high fat content should be reduced in this case.
